The University of Messina hosted the international conference "Extreme environments and climate changes: Satellite-Based Monitoring, Extremophiles, and Their Biotechnological Applications," promoted by the Research Center for Extreme Environments and Extremophiles (CUR-AEE). The initiative represented a high-profile scientific and institutional moment, confirming the University's role in the international landscape of life and earth sciences research.
The event, coordinated by the Scientific and Organizing Committee under the direction of Prof. Salvatore Magazù (Director of CUR-AEE and President of CISFA), emphasized the synergy between academic research and biotechnological applications. The sessions served as a showcase of excellence for analyzing complex issues, such as the habitability of other worlds, the functional profiles of microorganisms in warming climates, and the use of extremophilic compounds in the industrial sector.
The program featured prominent speakers, including Prof. Daniela Billi, Dr. Maria Papale, and Dr. Elisa Cauli, who offered an interdisciplinary perspective by integrating biological, physical, and biotechnological expertise. The contribution of professors and researchers from the University of Messina, including Prof. Salvatore Magazù, Prof. Maria Teresa Caccamo, Dr. Adila Sturniolo, and Dr. Katia Aragona, was of great significance; they explored the role of satellite monitoring in extreme environments, parametric resonance climate modeling, and the emergence of collective phenomena in complex systems.
The participation of institutional figures, such as Prof. Nunziacarla Spanò and Prof. Teresa Maugeri, further solidified the importance of collaboration between departments, research bodies, and international entities (including the University of Yerevan and the University of Concepción). The event, enriched by a poster session and a round table, concluded on a positive note, reaffirming the University's constant commitment to promoting cutting-edge scientific research oriented toward understanding and protecting the environment.
