AN EXPERIMENTAL CABIN TO IMPROVE WEATHER FORECASTS WAS CREATED IN MESSINA FROM THE COLLABORATION BETWEEN DRPC SICILIA AND UNIME.
This is an experimental cabin for the processing of weather forecasts on a regional scale for civil protection purposes and to guarantee nowcasting activities (short and very short term monitoring). Thanks to much more frequent and smaller-scale forecast updates than those acquired through current channels, the Centro Funzionale Decentrato-Idro della Regione Siciliana (CFD-Idro) will be able to count on a greater quantity of data useful for the development of Avvisi per il Rischio Meteo-Idrogeologico e Idraulico.
This activity was carried out within the framework of the agreement signed by the Dipartimento Regionale della Protezione Civile regionale (DRPC), Calogero Foti and by the Director of the Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences, Physical Sciences and Earth Sciences (MIFT) of the University of Messina, Fortunato Neri. The collaboration launched with the University of Messina, thanks to much more frequent and smaller-scale forecast updates compared to those acquired through current channels, will allow the CFD-Hydro of the Sicilian Region to have a greater quantity of useful data for the development of Meteo-Hydrogeological and Hydraulic Risk Alerts. Furthermore, as part of the agreement, the DRPC Sicily has established a specific “MEATHER UNIT” based in Messina as part of the Hydraulic and Hydrogeological Risk Service.
The scientific direction of the research activity will be covered by Professor Salvatore Magazù, full professor of Experimental Physics at the MIFT Department. A prestigious role for the Peloritano university which confirms itself at the forefront in the field of research.
