On 22/04/2020, the first day of the Meteorology Training Course intended for the personnel of Service S.04 and the Decentralized Hydro Functional Center of DRPC Sicily took place.
The lesson was organized within the framework of the agreement signed with the Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences, Physical Sciences and Earth Sciences (MIFT) of the University of Messina and represents the first of a cycle of 14 lessons during which topics related to the atmosphere and its components will be explored, including temperatures, winds, meteorological models and weather forecasting methods.
“The cycle of lessons, involving 24 managers and officials of the Department – explains Giuseppe Basile, head of Service 04 and promoter of the training project – aims to improve the knowledge and skills of the personnel responsible for the activities of the Decentralized Hydro Functional Center in the field of meteorology and of the Meteo Unit, directed by Eng. Bruno Manfrè and operating within the same Service, so that they may autonomously prepare Hydro-Meteorological and Hydraulic Warnings and monitor events during their development”.
“Through this agreement – says Calogero Foti, head of DRPC Sicily – a collaborative relationship with the University of Messina is strengthened and the foundations are laid for MIFT to develop, within a short time, a limited-area weather forecasting model capable of supporting the establishment of a Meteorological Service for regional civil protection and providing operational autonomy to the Decentralized Hydro Functional Center in forecasting activities”.
The first lessons, delivered by Prof. Magazù (UniMe) and Lt. Col. Colombo (Italian Air Force), introduced participants to the world of meteorology through a historical overview of the evolution of forecasting systems up to the description of the current international forecasting system.
