Messina celebrated World Meteorological Day 2026 with great participation. The event, celebrated worldwide on March 23 under the auspices of the World Meteorological Organization, confirmed the global value of scientific cooperation in the field of atmospheric sciences. The initiative, promoted within the framework of the University Sustainability Commission activities, was coordinated by Prof. Salvatore Magazù, Full Professor of Experimental Physics at the University of Messina.
The celebrations took place on March 23 at the Polo Papardo of the University of Messina and continued on March 24 at the MuMa – Sea Museum of Milazzo, becoming an important moment of scientific and institutional discussion that reaffirmed the city’s role in the study of atmospheric and climatic phenomena.
Of particular importance, as evidence of the synergy and collaboration existing since 2017, was the participation of the Italian Air Force – 41st Wing and Anti-Submarine Aviation of Sigonella, represented by Lieutenant Colonel Paolo Tredici. Representatives of the Frecce Tricolori Club of Messina and the Civil Protection Department were also present, testifying to the increasingly close relationship between scientific research, weather forecasting and territorial risk management.
The theme of the 2026 edition, “Observe today, protect tomorrow”, was interpreted as a synthesis of the relationship between knowledge and responsibility: observing as an act of rigorous understanding of natural phenomena, protecting as the conscious application of such knowledge for the safeguard of communities.
The event was also included within the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the Meteorological and Geodynamic Observatory of Messina, founded in 1876, an important opportunity to enhance the city’s scientific heritage and its historical role in the study of atmospheric phenomena.
During the two days, several speakers alternated, including Prof. Salvatore Magazù, Prof. Maria Teresa Caccamo, Dr. Katia Aragona, Dr. Franco Colombo, Dr. Luigi Pasotti, Dr. Davide Nigro, Dr. Agostino Semprebello and Dr. Carmelo Isgrò, offering an interdisciplinary perspective on meteorology and climate change.
The celebrations concluded with a positive balance, confirming the importance of initiatives that encourage dialogue between scientific research, institutions and society, contributing to the dissemination of a culture of prevention and sustainability.
